Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK. For some people PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectory) is recommended instead of LASIK.
PRK is an effective treatment alternative to LASIK. Like LASIK, PRK is used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It differs from LASIK in that no corneal flap is created prior to the laser vision correction treatment, instead the outer layer of cells (epithelial layer) of the cornea is removed to expose the treatment area.
PRK (no-flap laser vision correction) is a great option for many patients who have thinner corneas, or for anyone with an increased risk of direct trauma to the face and eye; such as members of the military or police force, athletes, or individuals who enjoy martial arts.
PRK makes it possible for those who are not a candidate for LASIK to enjoy laser vision correction, and life without glasses or contacts.
